THE CAPTAIN’S PORTRAIT DVD - An afternoon of painting with Richard Schmid.
In this video Richard Schmid executes a finished portrait in oil from life, in three hours, before an audience mainly of artists. The demonstration was videotaped at the Southern Vermont Center for the Arts in Manchester, Vermont. The video is actually two complete portraits which finally end up as one, demonstrating a familiar and reliable classical approach. The first sequence shows a full value monochrome rendering of his subject. In the segment, all of the challenges involving drawing, values, and edges are resolved. This is followed in the second part by a full color re-painting over the original monochrome study; the emphasis in this second phase being to maintain the strength of the initial work while bringing it into a sumptuous realistic color rendering.
Throughout the entire process Richard maintains a constant running commentary, not only explaining in clear and logical detail exactly what he is thinking and doing, but taking questions from his audience. Special photo gallery feature.
